If you are extremely careful with your hair and avoid all the normal pitfalls that will accelerate fading, such as:

  • Wait at least 24–48 hours before wet-washing your hair after you color it, or your colorist does. This allows the dye to deepen and settle into the hair cuticle.
  • Avoid the use of hot water to wet wash or shampoo color-treated hair. Hot water can and will fade hair color quickly.
  • Try to space out your shampooing days as far apart as you can (consider extending your hair-washing cycle).. Washing your hair too often will strip your color and natural oils. The more frequently you wash and handle hair, the faster the color will fade.
  • Look for products that specifically state they are safe for color-treated hair. SULFATE FREE products will not fade hair colour.
  • Avoid shampoo products with harsh color-stripping toxic or chemically laden shampoos. Read shampoo labels and avoid sulfate or paraben formulas.
  • Never use clarifying shampoos or anything with alcohol which can all strip hair color.
  • Finish every shampoo with a cool/cold water final rinse to seal in color. This will help slow down fading.
  • Eliminate the use of volumizing shampoos, conditioners, or styling products. They work by blowing open the hair cuticle, but this accelerates color loss. Yes, you may have volume, but you will sacrifice rapid color fading.
  • Although you can protect hair with heat protectants, drying with hot blow dryers at full heat/full speed will definitely accelerate color fading. If you must blow dry, use a protection product.
  • Blow dry at the slowest and coolest speed. Blow dry the underside of the hair first, to minimize heat directed to the top layers of the hair.
  • Avoid styling with hot irons, which can also fade color. It’s been shown that the constant use of hot irons can fade all hair colors.
  • Use old-fashioned heatless curlers or other devices (bathrobes, pin curls, rag rollers) to minimize the use of hot styling products. Even hood dryers can impact hair color.
  • Minimize or avoid the use of hot oil treatments since hot oil can strip color from hair follicles. When in doubt, read all labels and descriptions.
  • Look for leave-in conditioners and styling products that advertise they are good for color-treated hair.
  • Use deep conditioners / hair masks that are color-safe (sulfate free) to keep hair fully hydrated
  • Avoid chlorine or other pool chemicals which can do serious damage to hair color. Keep hair covered in the air-tight cap.

Minimize Brassiness With A Blue Colored Shampoo

A blue shampoo is used once a week (if you shampoo every day) or twice a month (if you shampoo once or twice a week) to counterbalance the brassiness of your hair.

It will help to remove any brassy red or orange undertones.

While blondes should use a purple or violent shampoo, black or dark brunette hair should use blue colored shampoo.

Blue or purple shampoo products coat the hair cuticle, canceling out brassiness, and adding shine.  Make sure to hydrate after the shampoo with the conditioner to keep hair properly moisturized.

Experiment with alternating blue and/or purple shampoo with your regular shampoo as needed.

UV Damage

The Sun can fade hair color.

The ultraviolet rays in sunlight consistently will break down the chemical hair bonds accelerating hair color fading.

Ultraviolet rays can also cause the hair to become more dry and brittle. Dry and brittle hair is dull hair without shine or shimmer.

To minimize hair color fade and other damage, limit your time in the sun or always wear a cover-up like a beanie, hair, or similar.
