Effect of Heat / Humidity on Scalp and Hair in Summer

As the temperature increases & humidity is high, your hair and scalp is likely to be effected by the heat by producing excess oil and sweat, causing irritation, itchiness, flaking and scalp buildup.

Humidity does not allow sweat to evaporate therefore retaining bacteria, excess oil, dirt, and pollutants on the surface of the scalp. These can quickly build up on your scalp and weaken the scalp barrier. This is also why hot and humid weather is also the time when you might get scalp build-up dandruff, greasy hair and Scalp acne (folliculitis).

How to maintain a healthy scalp and hair in humid weather.

What causes Dandruff?

Dandruff may have several causes, including: dry environment causing dry skin, Irritated scalp, oily scalp, not shampooing enough, not using enough shampoo, or that the shampoo you use isn’t strong enough to break down the oil barrier that is contributing to your dandruff, not rinsing shampoo thoroughly, product build up on scalp from styling products.

A common yeast called pityrosporum orbiculare that feeds on skin oils on the scalp is the main reason for dandruff. Those of us with oily scalps are more susceptible to dandruff.

What is Dandruff and why does it keep coming back?

Dandruff also known as Pityriasis capitis is Scaly white dead skin flakes from the human scalp;

It is a condition called seborrheic dermatitis, or  that happens on the scalp. It affects kids and adults. Dandruff causes flaky, white, or yellowish skin to form on the scalp and other oily parts of the body.

What are the different types of Dandruff and recommended shampoo for each type?

Dry Skin–Related Dandruff

This is the most common type of dandruff. It usually occurs during the winter months and results from cold, dry weather. Skin is prone to drying out during the winter months which can make dandruff worse

It is linked with using hot water to shampoo the hair. Hot water dries out the scalp, which can cause flakes.

Keep the balance of scalp health by using a shampoo formulated with prebiotics and probiotics ALFAPARF MILANO Dandruff Purifying Low shampoo SCALP REBALANCE 1000ml that replenish moisture into your scalp and can alleviate — or even completely get rid of — dandruff caused by dry skin

Oil-Related Dandruff

This occurs from a buildup of sebum (oil) on the scalp. The sebum is overproduced by the hair follicles. The result is the clumping together of sebum and dead skin cells on the scalp.

The clumps of dead skin cells—along with dirt on the scalp—form the itchy dandruff flakes, which are oily and a yellowish color.

Fungus-Related Dandruff

This is caused by a type of yeast, or fungus, called Malassezia - pityrosporum orbiculare. This yeast is part of the skin’s natural microorganisms that live naturally on the skin. It help to control the levels of microorganisms like fungus. When there is excess sebum, however, Malassezia is known to proliferate because it grows in sebum.

This type of yeast also produces a by-product that causes the skin cells to clump together, forming the white flakes commonly seen in dandruff.

Skin Condition–Related Dandruff

Several skin conditions cause skin flaking. The skin condition most often linked with dandruff is seborrheic dermatitis (SD), which causes:

  • Severe redness
  • Red scaly patches
  • Itching
  • Inflammation of the scalp (and other areas of the body, such as the face and ears)

There are other types of skin conditions that can cause flaking of the scalp, such as:

Psoriasis, Eczema and Sebopsoriasis (a skin condition that has some symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis and some symptoms of psoriasis)

To help reduce the irritation caused to the scalp by these skin conditions use  ALFAPARF SEMI DI LINO SCALP RENEW Energizing Low Shampoo 1000ml with ALFAPARF Milano Semi Di Lino Scalp Renew Hair Loss Energizing Tonic

Scalp acne is a form of folliculitis caused by bacteria living on the skin. The bacteria invade hair follicles and feed on sebum produced by oil glands.
The excess sebum provides food for the bacteria that live in hair follicles called P. acnes.
When you have inflamed or infected pores, whiteheads may form that are filled with pus.
Dandruff, another type of scalp acne, occurs when P. acnes infects epidermal cells of your scalp, where they feed on dead skin cells, leading to flaky white or gray patches on your forehead nose, scalp, and neck.
Sebum is produced by sebaceous glands connected to your hair follicles; if these glands produce excess sebum because of humidity, they will secrete more oil onto the skin where P. acnes feed on it.
This causes inflammation of the follicle due to bacterial infection.

Dandruff Haircare

Washing hair more frequently can help reduce the sebum and control dandruff and its symptoms.

Opt for shampoos that treat the scalp and dandruff based on the type of dandruff. Take care to use enough shampoo and give yourself enough time to massage shampoo throughout the scalp and rinse shampoo thoroughly: leftover residue could create a feeding ground for pityrosporum orbiculare.

If you are prone to Dandruff flare ups stop using thick pomades or certain oils, as Yeast feeds off lipids and can cause rapid increase of yeast on your scalp which will  lead to dandruff. Cut back on hair sprays, styling gels, and mousses when possible. These styling products can build up on your hair and scalp and cause oiliness.

Sometimes alternating two or more shampoo types can also help.

Once things are under control and you have successfully restore the Natural pH balance of your scalp you may only need to use the shampoo occasionally to maintain good effect.

While dandruff can be annoying and embarrassing at times, it usually doesn’t indicate a more serious health issue. The itching and flaking often respond well to OTC shampoos and treatments. Keep trying different brands and types until you find something that works for you.

Stop scratching, If your itch isn’t letting up or your scalp becomes red or swollen, make an appointment with your doctor.
